Its headline makes a blunt claim: 70 percent of people will be doomed if syphilis treatment is delayed for three years. The silkscreen was sponsored by the New York City Department of Correction and produced under the Work Projects Administration's poster program, part of the federal relief effort of the Depression years. Syphilis was widespread and often went untreated before penicillin became the standard cure in the 1940s, and posters like this used stark wording and bold color to push people toward clinics, where stigma and cost often kept them away.
