The poster's message is in its title: examination results are confidential, a promise meant to persuade people to get tested for syphilis. Printed in silkscreen, it was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists to make public health and civic posters during the Depression. The record places it in Illinois in the 1930s, when venereal disease was a serious public health concern and fear of exposure kept many people away from clinics.
