Here the poster's message is blunt: it asks Illinois residents to support local and state efforts to reduce syphilis. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced many health posters during the Depression, using silkscreen to make inexpensive runs for display in clinics, schools and public buildings. Syphilis was a serious public health concern in the 1930s, and campaigns like this one tried to encourage testing and treatment at a time when the disease carried heavy stigma. A March 1940 date stamp on the back suggests the poster stayed in use for several years after it was first printed.
