Few WPA health posters are as blunt as this one, which tells New Yorkers that six in ten people with syphilis could be cured if they sought treatment before the disease advanced. The city's Department of Correction sponsored it, an unusual backer that suggests how closely public health and municipal agencies worked together during the Depression. Federal Art Project designers made silkscreen posters like this to reach people who would never read a dense pamphlet, and the flat color blocks and short wording were meant to be taken in at a glance on a street corner or in a clinic waiting room.
