This 1936 poster names Dr. W.H. Runcie, health officer for the Town of Hempstead on Long Island, and its headline frames syphilis as an ancient affliction: "as old as creation." Its dinosaur motif, an unusual choice for a health notice, plays on that age to suggest a bygone disease that treatment could now end. The Federal Art Project produced many such public health posters in the 1930s, when venereal disease was a widely discussed concern. The word "curable" reflected real but limited progress, since treatment then relied on arsenic- and bismuth-based drugs, and the poster's central advice was to consult a physician.
