Its title, "Keep fit ... get your test now," pairs a lean athlete caught mid-leap over a hurdle with a direct call to be screened, a combination that sets it apart from many health posters of the period. Tuberculosis was among the leading causes of death in American cities in the 1930s, and Chicago health campaigns urged residents to get tested early, when treatment was most likely to work. The Federal Art Project's Chicago workshops produced posters like this one for public agencies using silkscreen, a stencil method that allowed bold flat color and cheap runs. The date stamped on the back, April 1939, shows the poster was still in circulation several years after it was designed.
