March on to health" urges viewers to get tested, and its marching figures suggest a parade of schoolchildren and families moving together toward a clinic. In the 1930s, tuberculosis remained a serious threat in American cities, and municipal sanatoriums like the one named here ran screening and treatment programs for the public. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, commissioned posters like this one to carry public health messages to people who might not read a pamphlet. The silkscreen process allowed the designers to print bold, flat areas of color in quantity, which made the posters inexpensive to display in clinics, schools and storefronts.
