Few posters from the Depression era tie a child's schoolwork to something as stark as tuberculosis, yet this silkscreen does exactly that. Produced under the Federal Art Project and issued by the City of Chicago's Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium, it pairs a health message with a call for children to keep up their school performance. Tuberculosis was a serious public health concern in Chicago in the 1930s, and city clinics ran programs that screened children and encouraged regular checkups. The Works Progress Administration's poster division, part of the Federal Art Project, produced many such public health and civic notices, using bold flat color to reach readers quickly.
