Floyd Bennett Field, the city's first municipal airport, opened on Brooklyn's Jamaica Bay in 1931, and this poster sets it beside North Beach in Queens, the site that later became LaGuardia Airport. The silkscreen was produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program that employed artists to make public posters, and it names Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and Commissioner of Docks John McKenzie, the officials who oversaw the city's airports. A date stamp on the back reads December 8, 1937, which places it in the late 1930s, when New York was expanding its air facilities.
