Few theater posters of the period bring aviation drama to the street as directly as this silkscreen for *Ceiling Zero*, Frank Wead's three-act melodrama about airmail pilots battling bad weather. Wead, a former naval aviator, drew on his flying background for the play, and its title refers to conditions so overcast that planes cannot take off or land. The poster was produced under the Work Projects Administration, whose federal art program made silkscreen posters for community theater and civic productions in the 1930s. The verso carries a 1939 date stamp, which shows the sheet was still in circulation years after the play's original run.
