The Statue of Liberty is the focal point here, with military aircraft and an aircraft carrier set around it, a combination that ties the nation's symbol of freedom to aerial defense. The poster dates to 1941, when the United States was still officially neutral but was rapidly expanding aircraft production and sending war materiel to Britain under the Lend-Lease program. Its slogan, "Keep 'em flying," urged support for that buildup. The Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project produced the poster as part of a broader effort to use graphic art for public information, and it reflects the mood of the months before Pearl Harbor, when the country was preparing for a larger role in the war.
