A glass negative of the drawings for Otto Lilienthal's flying machine, sheet one of two, showing Figures I through III of U.S. Patent 544,816, issued August 20, 1895. Lilienthal, a German engineer, studied the flight of birds and built hang gliders that he flew from artificial hills near Berlin, making well over a thousand glides in the early 1890s. He patented his designs to protect them, and his published work strongly influenced later aviation pioneers. He died in 1896 after a glider crash. This copy belongs to the Gilbert H. Grosvenor collection of Bell family photographs, which reflects the family's wide interest in flight.
