Rather than a photograph of a machine, this glass negative preserves a copy of a patent drawing for a flying machine credited to W.F. Quinby, though the record also suggests W.P. Quimby. The patent, number 95,513, was granted on October 5, 1869, during a period when many inventors tried to build craft with flapping wings like a bird's, a type called an ornithopter. The negative itself was made between 1880 and 1900 and belongs to the Gilbert H. Grosvenor collection of Bell family photographs, which reflects the family's wide interest in flight.
