Rather than a balloon, this watercolour shows a wooden-framed machine fitted with large blades, possibly one of the mechanical flying devices that circulated alongside ballooning. After the Montgolfier brothers' hot-air balloon rose near Paris in 1783, French inventors proposed many ways to move through the air under their own power, often with oars, paddles or flapping vanes. Designs like this one reflect that period of excitement, when balloons had shown that flight was possible but no one yet had a reliable way to steer. The painted frame and blades offer a useful record of how such ideas were imagined on paper.
