The title on this glass negative names a Wright machine, though the National Photo Company's label is unverified, so the subject is best read as an aircraft built to Wright designs or by a Wright company. Wright aircraft were central to American aviation after the brothers' 1903 flight at Kitty Hawk, and their firms were still active around 1918 to 1920, when wartime demand for aircraft and engines was winding down. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the collection in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coatings, which lends the image a softened, weathered quality worth noticing.
