The title on this glass negative, "Wright Machine," suggests an airplane built to the Wright brothers' design, though the record notes that the name comes from unverified data written by the National Photo Company. Orville and Wilbur Wright's powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903 launched a generation of aircraft built on their control principles, and their designs were widely used in aviation in the late 1910s. The negative is one of the company's glass plates from roughly 1918 to 1920, and it shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
