The record gives this glass negative the title "Wright Machine," though the National Photo Company's own label for it is unverified, so the subject is best read as an early airplane of the Wright type. The Wright brothers' biplane design shaped American aviation from the first powered flights in 1903, and by the late 1910s their name still identified aircraft and engines built under their patents. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, made many such plates during and just after World War I, when aviation was receiving intense public and military attention. The negative's surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating.
