A small boy of about three, Orville Wright sits in this half-length portrait within an oval, looking straight at the camera. The record dates it to about 1874, though the question mark signals that the year is an estimate. Orville, born in 1871 in Dayton, Ohio, was the younger brother of Wilbur Wright, and the two later built the first successful powered airplane. They made its first controlled, sustained flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903. Oval vignettes like this were a common studio format in the 1870s, so the portrait also reflects the conventions of its time.
