Orville Wright is shown at the controls of the Wright Flyer during one of the power flights at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. This copy print was made by the U.S. Army Air Service from a photograph taken that year, and it records the moment the Wright brothers' aircraft lifted under its own engine power and flew with a pilot aboard. The flight was short, but it was the first controlled, sustained powered flight by a heavier-than-air machine, and the image is one of the best surviving records of that morning on the dunes.
