Pan American Airways' poster carries the line "It's a small world," which pitches the transpacific route as a way to bring distant places within easy reach. By 1938 the airline had been flying large flying boats across the Pacific for a few years, linking California with Hawaii and Asia, and this artwork by Lawler presents that crossing as glamorous and newly possible. Posters like it helped build the tourism market of the 1930s, when air travel was still novel and a Pacific crossing was among the most ambitious feats in commercial aviation.
