Keep cool, don't scream, don't run: these three commands lead this color silkscreen poster, which tells residents how to behave during an air raid drill. It was produced under the Pennsylvania arm of the Works Progress Administration's art program and is dated between 1941 and 1943, with a January 21, 1943 date stamp on the front. A pencil note credits the design to Charlotte Angus. After the United States entered World War II, civil defense programs spread through American cities, and practice alerts and blackouts were meant to prepare communities for a feared attack from the air. The poster's plain, direct wording shows how such materials aimed to shape public conduct quickly.
