Few details of this picture are spelled out in its record, but its title sets the scene: a crowd leaving the opera in the year 2000, as imagined by a French artist. Images like this belong to a popular body of turn-of-the-century illustration, in which artists pictured the future as a place of everyday flight, with aircraft replacing carriages and streetcars. Aviation was then newly real, since powered flight had only begun in the first years of the 1900s, and these pictures reflected both excitement and confidence about what machines might do. Looking closely, you can see how the artist turned an ordinary evening out into a glimpse of a modern world.
