A city health warning about firecrackers, produced for the New York City Department of Health, makes this poster stand out among the WPA prints on the board. Its message is aimed at children, whose injuries from fireworks were a recurring concern in American cities in the 1930s. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed artists to design public information posters for municipal agencies, and this one was made in the silkscreen process, which allowed bold flat color at low cost. A date stamp on the back records April 16, 1937, which helps place it in the mid-decade period when these campaigns were at their height.
