Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch director-general of New Netherland, anchors this 1936 silkscreen poster's account of New York's fire service. In the 1650s, when the settlement was still called New Amsterdam, his administration required householders to keep leather buckets and ladders and appointed fire wardens to inspect chimneys, an early step toward organized firefighting. Produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration during the Depression, the piece presents civic services as a long public tradition and reflects the New Deal's effort to put artists to work while honoring municipal labor.
