The poster's title, "Water supply No. 1," points to one of the earliest municipal arrangements in what became New York City, when the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam relied on wells and nearby springs for drinking water. Before the English took the colony in 1664, that scarcity shaped where people settled and how the town was run. This silkscreen belongs to a Works Progress Administration series that retold the city's civic history for the public, and its National Park Service sponsorship reflects how Depression-era federal art projects promoted local history. The record dates the print to 1699, which does not match the mid-1600s subjects it lists, so the exact year is worth checking against other sources.
