Rather than a generic firefighting scene, this poster centers on a steam engine belonging to Fire Department No. 3 in New York, a machine from the 1840s, when the city's firefighting was shifting from hand-pumped apparatus to steam power. Steam fire engines reached American cities in the early 1840s and let a crew throw far more water on a blaze, which explains the 1840-1850 period named in the record. The silkscreen dates to 1936, when the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, hired artists to produce posters on public services during the Great Depression. Its look back at a century-old machine reflects how these New Deal designers often turned to municipal history.
