The title names a fire engine, a hand-pumped apparatus that marked a step beyond the leather-bucket brigades of earlier colonial New York. The subjects place the scene in the 1730s, when neighbors and volunteer companies fought blazes in a city of wooden buildings. Made in 1936 as a silkscreen by the Federal Art Project, the print belongs to a Works Progress Administration series that used bold graphics to present civic history to the public during the Depression.
