Part of a WPA series on the history of New York City's municipal services, this silkscreen print focuses on the city's water supply. Its record lists a date of 1699, which likely reflects the subject's age rather than the poster's, since the Federal Art Project produced it in the 1930s. Those posters aimed to educate the public about civic infrastructure during the Depression, when federal programs put artists and laborers to work. New York's water needs grew sharply through the nineteenth century, and the Croton Aqueduct, completed in 1842, carried water from reservoirs north of the city to meet them.
