Under Dutch rule, New Amsterdam's night watchmen patrolled the streets after dark carrying wooden rattles, which gave the "rattle watch" its name. This WPA silkscreen, printed by the Federal Art Project in New York around 1936, presents that early force as the first step in the city's police history. The series it belongs to was meant to show New Yorkers the civic services that had grown out of the colonial settlement. The rattle served as both a warning and a signal, letting residents and fellow watchmen know where a patrol was moving through the dark streets of the small Dutch town.
