Sioux City, Iowa, is the particular setting here, where the city's Department of Public Recreation sponsored a civic chorus performing Handel's *Messiah*. The silkscreen poster was printed in 1936 under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program that employed artists to design public announcements. Community performances of *Messiah* were a popular tradition in American towns during the 1930s, and the flat, bold color typical of silkscreen suits the poster's direct message. A January 1940 date stamp on the back suggests the sheet stayed in use for some time after the concert was announced.
