Sioux City, Iowa, hosted its 1940 Music Week, and this silkscreen poster, issued under the Department of Public Recreation, advertised the bands and choirs taking part. A date stamp on the back reads May 9, 1940, which places its printing shortly before the event. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced posters like this one during the 1930s and early 1940s to publicize public concerts, sports, and classes. Silkscreen was a fairly inexpensive method, so the program could make bold, colorful announcements for local community events.
