Few posters in the collection place a concert so squarely on Long Island: this one advertises a program by the Nassau Suffolk W.P.A. Symphony Orchestra, with the Athletic & Recreation Department as presenter. Its silkscreen color reflects the Federal Art Project's poster division, which made low-cost, eye-catching announcements for free public events during the Depression. The Works Progress Administration also funded musicians through its Federal Music Project, so orchestras like this one brought paid employment and concerts to towns that rarely hosted professional music. A May 1941 date stamped on the back shows the sheet was still in circulation years after the concert was first advertised.
