A silkscreen poster from 1936 promotes a symphony orchestra in Illinois, sponsored by the Federal Music Project of the Works Progress Administration. The Federal Music Project employed out-of-work musicians and brought orchestral concerts to audiences who seldom heard live symphonies, often at low or no cost. The design is attributed to Ralph Graham, and a May 1937 date stamp on the back shows the poster was still in circulation months after it was made. Silkscreen was a favored method for WPA posters because it printed cheaply in bold, flat color.
