Printed in silkscreen in 1937, this poster advertises an Illinois symphony orchestra and was sponsored by the Federal Music Project, one of the arts units of the Works Progress Administration. The Library of Congress record notes a date stamp of May 22, 1937 on the back, and the design may be the work of Ralph Graham, who led the Chicago poster division. The federal arts programs employed musicians and artists during the Depression, and their posters brought free and low-cost concerts to ordinary audiences. The catalog pairs the image with the subject of musical notation, a reminder that the posters were meant to be read quickly by people walking past.
