A silkscreen poster from 1938 announces the Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra under conductor Frank Foti, and it is one of the many concert posters the Federal Art Project produced during the Works Progress Administration years. The Work Projects Administration, as the agency was later renamed, employed artists across the country to make posters that promoted public events, including free or low-cost concerts that brought symphonic music to communities outside the largest cities. Silkscreen was a practical choice for these jobs because it allowed small print runs in bold flat color, and this example reflects the period's effort to make civic culture visible on town streets during the Depression.
