The poster announces a series of Russian symphony concerts led by conductor Eugene Plotnikoff, with a program of Tchaikovsky, placing it in New York's concert life of the 1930s. The Federal Music Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored concerts like this to keep musicians working and to bring orchestral music to audiences during the Depression. The poster was made as a silkscreen, a method the WPA's print shops used to produce bold, inexpensive publicity in quantity. A date stamp on the back reads June 28, 1939, three years after the poster's 1936 date, which suggests it was kept or handled well after the concert season it advertised.
