Unlike most posters from the Federal Music Project, this one advertises a series devoted to new work: the Composers Forum-Laboratory, a New York program that gave hearings to American composers, many of them little known to the public. The Works Progress Administration funded such concerts during the Depression to keep musicians working while bringing live music to public halls and neighborhoods. Silkscreen posters like this were produced by WPA artists in New York, and the date stamped on the back, December 8, 1937, places it within the run of the third series of fortnightly concerts.
