Few posters on this board put a dictator at the center of the design, but this 1936 silkscreen from the Detroit Federal theater Unit does, showing Hitler among soldiers in a crowd of saluting, raised fists. The production was an adaptation of Sinclair Lewis's 1935 novel *It Can't Happen Here*, which imagined a populist politician seizing power in the United States and building a fascist state. The image therefore warns about home-grown authoritarianism as much as it comments on Europe. The Federal theater Project, a Works Progress Administration program, mounted the play in cities across the country, and the poster was designed to draw audiences into a story that spoke directly to the political debates of the day.
