Ohio's Federal theater production of Dickens's *A Christmas Carol*, advertised here for young audiences, shows how the Works Progress Administration brought holiday stories to public stages. The Federal theater Project, begun in 1935 as part of the WPA, employed out-of-work actors, directors and stage crews, and it staged plays in theaters, schools and community halls, often at low admission prices. Posters like this one were produced by WPA artists using silkscreen, a method that allowed bold, flat color to be printed in multiple copies. The Christmas subject ties the poster to a long tradition of seasonal theater that Dickens's novella helped popularize.
