Built as a New Year's greeting from the New York Federal Art Project, this 1938 calendar is less a timekeeping tool than a piece of the agency's self-presentation. Its caption names the project's leadership: Holger Cahill as national director, Audrey McMahon as regional director, and Richard Floethe, who headed the poster division, along with Col. Frank C. Harrington, administrator of the Works Progress Administration. The Federal Art Project, part of the WPA, employed artists during the Depression, and its poster division turned out designs for public health, transportation, theater, and other public causes. Looking at the calendar, you can see how the project used commercial-style printmaking to bring modern graphic design to ordinary households.
