Built around an eagle, a painter's palette, and a logo-like emblem, this color silkscreen served as a cover for a calendar issued by the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project for 1939. The Federal Art Project, one of the New Deal programs that employed artists during the Great Depression, used silkscreen because it could produce bold, flat areas of color cheaply and in quantity. Its posters and printed materials were meant to reach a broad public, and the combination of symbols here reflects the program's effort to promote both American imagery and the artistic work it supported.
