The subject is the roof of the Congressional Library, the room inside the U.S. Capitol that housed the national library before the institution took its later name. The image is a salted paper print, an early photographic process that was popular in the 1850s and produced the soft, warm tones seen here. The library's rebuilding followed a fire in December 1851 that destroyed a large part of its collection, and the replacement room was framed in iron to make it fireproof. Photographs like this one document that ironwork, which was an unusual choice for a government building of the period.
