The original plan of Washington, District of Columbia, laid out the federal capital on a grid cut through by wide diagonal avenues, a design drawn up under Pierre Charles L'Enfant in the early 1790s. Its radiating streets were meant to link the Capitol, the President's House and open squares, giving a new national city a monumental layout unlike the older colonial towns along the Atlantic seaboard. Worth noticing is how the plan imagined far more space and grandeur than the small, muddy settlement that existed at the time, a gap between vision and reality that shaped the city for generations.
