Few views of the building are as early as this one: a hand-colored engraving that shows Federal Hall in New York, the first seat of the national government. The former City Hall on Wall Street was remodeled for Congress, and George Washington took the presidential oath on its balcony on April 30, 1789. Congress met there until the capital moved to Philadelphia in 1790. The print was issued by Amos Doolittle, a New Haven engraver, and its hand coloring was typical of the small, inexpensive views sold to Americans who wanted images of the new government.
