Work on the stack area behind the Library of Congress's Main Building is the subject of this June 1926 view, which shows the building's book storage being expanded. The Main Building, opened in 1897 and now called the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed in the Beaux-Arts style by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, and its stacks were built to hold a fast-growing collection. The caption card also lists lamps and shelving among its subjects, pointing to the fixtures and storage furnishings installed in the new space. Because the record is brief, the photograph is most useful as evidence of how the library kept adding room for books in its early decades.
