A view of the southeast corner of the Library of Congress building under construction in Washington, D.C., dated August 6, 1892, on its original caption card. By then the structure had been rising on Capitol Hill for several years, meant to relieve the cramped quarters the Library had long shared in the Capitol. The photograph records the stonework and scaffolding at one corner, a snapshot of progress before the building opened in 1897. Because the date comes from an old caption card that has not been independently checked, it is best read as a working record of the site.
