This drawing shows the planned layout for one of the two reading rooms in the Library of Congress Annex, the building the Library developed in the 1930s to ease crowding in its main Capitol Hill quarters. Dated May 20, 1937, it survives as a photomechanical reproduction of a drawing by J. Rowland Snyder, a form of copy that let architectural plans be circulated and studied without handling the original sheets. The Annex, later named the John Adams Building, was meant to give readers and staff room the older building could no longer provide, so plans like this one show the Library's effort to balance public study space with the storage of its growing collections.
