This view records a north pavilion exhibition hall inside the Library of Congress, a space the institution set aside for public displays of books, maps, and documents. The Library's main building, the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened in Washington in 1897 and was designed to show the nation's collections as well as store them, so exhibition rooms like this one reflected a period when museums and libraries were presenting their holdings to ordinary visitors. Photographs from the early twentieth century like this one help show how such halls were arranged and furnished before later renovations changed them.
