This ink drawing is a general plan, one sheet in a lettered "A" series, that shows the overall layout of the Library of Congress complex in Washington, D.C. Sheets like this were used to coordinate the building's architecture and engineering, so they show how the spaces and circulation were meant to fit together before construction. The Library's main building, now the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed in the 1880s and 1890s and opened in 1897, and its surviving drawings are valued for showing the original design intent. The record does not give a date or draftsman, so the sheet's exact purpose and origin are best confirmed through the Library's drawing collections.
