Rather than a view of the building's exterior, this drawing shows a basement floor plan, rendered in ink and gouache on paper. It belongs to the Architectural and Engineering drawings held by the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division, a body of working plans for the library's main building on Capitol Hill. That building went up in the 1890s, designed first by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and completed under Edward Pearce Casey. Plans like this one show how much of the structure's service space, including storage and mechanical areas, lay beneath the public halls above.
